Goldbeck, a leading specialist in industrial modular construction, is creating a climate neutral logistics facility on behalf of the real estate developer Ixocon. The tenant is METRO LOGISTICS Services GmbH, a METRO company. At the new site in Kirchheim an der Weinstraße, some 380 jobs will be created by mid-2018. In the future, the site will supply the METRO distribution lines METRO Cash & Carry and Real. The 50,000-square-meter facility is being built climate neutrally and in accordance with the “Gold” standard specified by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen). In order to calculate and offset the total emissions, Goldbeck calculated the carbon emissions for producing the building, covering everything from the procurement of raw materials and the manufacturing of system elements to the installation of all building materials. Goldbeck is offsetting these emissions via a carbon offset project in Katuntsi, Bulgaria. There, a small hydropower plant saves a total of 84,131 tons of CO2. Positive aspects: In the structurally weak southwestern region of Bulgaria, new jobs are being created through the construction and operation of the plant. In addition, feeding the sustainably generated electricity into the Bulgarian energy grid reduces the combustion of fossil fuels. The plant uses water from the existing Spancevo irrigation canal and additionally has a 3,000-cubic-meter water reservoir, such that even when a great deal of water is needed, electricity can be generated in an uninterrupted, efficient manner.
Goldbeck completed the logistics hall in just 11 months. The first goods were delivered in July 2017.
