ClimatePartner certified: Hörmann KG achieves a new level of climate action

June 23, 2023
  • Hörmann has firmly embedded climate action in its strategy and transparently demonstrates its work across the five key steps.
  • Dedicated climate-ID pages for certified products in the residential and commercial construction sectors provide a clear overview of the results for all five steps, including carbon footprints, achieved reductions, and future reduction targets.
  • As part of its climate action strategy, Hörmann finances climate projects for forest conservation in Indonesia and reforestation in Uruguay, as well as supporting wind energy projects in India and Brazil.

Hörmann, the leading European manufacturer of doors and gates, relies on ClimateParter certified for its climate action strategy. The family-owned company has calculated carbon footprints for its products in the residential and commercial construction sectors, defined goals for carbon reduction, and implemented reductions. The company also funds international climate projects and transparently communicates these efforts. With this, Hörmann has completed the five steps in climate action. By displaying the "ClimatePartner certified" label on its products, the company's achievements at each step are traceable on the unique climate-ID pages.

Special attention is given to reducing carbon emissions. In addition to many other measures, Hörmann powers all its European production sites with 100% green energy, saving more than 75,000 tonnes of carbon annually. To further reduce emissions, the manufacturer places great importance on expanding material cycles and optimising resource use. Hörmann employs a certified intelligent energy management system, recycles its materials, ensures carbon-neutral shipping, uses recycled paper, and focuses on reducing and upcycling packaging materials. For example, wastepaper is transformed into packaging bags for securely transporting products. Another cycle is achieved by recycling the slats from garage doors. Old or no longer usable slats are separated into their individual components, steel and rigid foam (polyurethane), and used as raw material or recycled.

Hörmann's largest German factory in Ichtershausen, Thuringia has launched a project to locally produce hydrogen to be used as process heat. This allows natural gas, a fossil fuel, to be partially replaced with renewable hydrogen. The wood-processing Hörmann factories also utilise the chips created during production to generate energy through combustion. In addition to its reduction initiatives, Hörmann finances several certified climate projects. The projects Rimba Raya Forest Conservation (Indonesia), Afforestation Guanaré (Uruguay), Karnataka Wind Energy (India), Satara Wind Energy (India), and Macaúbas Wind Energy (Brazil) are proven to avoid emissions and play a central role in achieving the 1.5 °C target.

According to Moritz Lehmkuhl, CEO of ClimatePartner, "the new concept of ClimatePartner certified, introduced in early April, has already received very positive feedback. We are pleased that Hörmann is one of the first companies to consistently meet the criteria and bring its products to the market with the new label."

Lehmkuhl further notes that "Hörmann has long been a pioneer in climate action and stands out for its high sense of responsibility and sustainability. With ClimatePartner certified, the company has achieved another milestone for greater climate action and has committed itself to contributing to the structural reduction of emissions. Hörmann saves emissions in its own value chain and simultaneously finances climate projects that bring additional social and environmental benefits."
