Milano Marathon 2022 goes carbon neutral
December 22, 2021ClimatePartner works hard to help companies join in the race to net zero—but it is a first for us to make a marathon carbon neutral. We’ve joined forces with RCS Sports & Events to do exactly that at the 2022 Milano Marathon in April.
The aim is to measure the emissions related to the event (from the arrival of accredited runners, to overnight stays, event technology as well as energy, food and beverages). Not only will we be looking at how to keep emissions to a minimum, but we will also offset the event’s unavoidable emissions, as well as work on new ideas and projects with RCS Sports & Events to make the marathon sustainable from all standpoints, involving participants, sponsors and citizens. These are preliminary calculations and the actual emissions incurred will be recalculated after the event.
Paolo Bellino, CEO and General Manager of RCS Sports & Events, says, "We are working to ensure that the Milano Marathon becomes more and more one of the great events of the city, and the city is following us: we are the second sports event in Europe for collecting donations, behind the London Marathon. Our objectives remain to exceed 10,000 participants and 40,000 total admissions between marathon, relay and school marathon, and to become an event with zero CO2 emissions.”
To address the marathon’s unavoidable emissions, we are offering a range of high-quality offset projects in different regions and with various technologies that seek to engage people and stimulate local development. These projects comply to recognized standards, such as the Gold Standard or the Verified Carbon Standard and are geared towards the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.
