When sharing multiplies the impact: How Maschinenringe tracks and reduces its carbon footprint

A handshake that sparked a movement

In 1958, in the Bavarian village of Buchhofen, 14 farmers shook hands on a simple but powerful agreement: to share their machinery in order to use resources more efficiently and support one another. This moment marked the founding of Maschinenringe. More than six decades later, that spirit of cooperation  lives on. Maschinenringe Deutschland GmbH has grown into a modern service provider supporting agricultural businesses, strengthening rural communities, and promoting environmental sustainability and resource efficiency.

The challenge: Carbon accounting across a complex organisation

With a wide-ranging portfolio of services, products, locations, and processes, Maschinenringe faced a complex challenge: how can all carbon-relevant data be systematically captured and managed? The company already had a strong awareness and clear motivation for ambitious climate action. But to reduce emissions effectively, it needed a structured, standardised framework for calculating and monitoring carbon emissions across all operations.

The solution: A corporate carbon footprint built with ClimatePartner

In 2024, Maschinenringe partnered with ClimatePartner to calculate its Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF) for the first time, laying the groundwork for measurable climate progress.
To support this effort, the company:

  • Introduced a centralised data management system
  • Assigned clear roles and responsibilities
  • Trained employees across departments.

This structured approach has led to greater transparency, internal engagement, and external credibility. Maschinenringe set a reduction target of 25% fewer carbon emissions by 2030, compared to its 2024 baseline.

First measures, real impact

The company has already implemented its first reduction measures.

  • Their main site now runs on 100% renewable electricity
  • The vehicle fleet is being gradually converted to hybrid and electric models
  • Business travel is being replaced where possible with digital communication tools.
  • Employee awareness campaigns have made climate action a shared responsibility.

From calculation to continuous climate action

Maschinenringe plans to:

  • Update its carbon footprint annually
  • Expand its catalogue of reduction measures
  • Integrate sustainability criteria across all areas of the business

The next milestone: publishing a comprehensive sustainability report to communicate progress and align with broader ESG expectations.

"Working with ClimatePartner has not only convinced us on a professional level, but also significantly deepened our understanding of climate action. Thanks to the detailed calculation of our Corporate Carbon Footprint and the expert answers to all our questions, we feel well equipped to drive forward our efforts to reduce CO₂ emissions."
