Green energy for all your locations and sites

Energy consumption for electricity, steam, heating, and cooling is often responsible for a large part of a company’s carbon emissions. Switching to green energy, i.e., energy from renewable sources, is a key measure for companies to significantly reduce their Scope 2 emissions and thus their carbon footprint.

ClimatePartner enables companies to convert sites in all countries to green energy. To this end, we offer the procurement of Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) from all national and international certificates systems (Guarantees of Origin in Europe, RECs in the USA and Canada, I-RECs internationally) from all renewable energy technologies. These technologies include solar, wind, hydropower, biomass and geothermal energy.

How does green electricity work in conjunction with Energy Attribute Certificates?

By using Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) companies can purchase electricity from renewable energy sources without having to change existing supply contracts. Watch this video to learn more about the benefits of green electricity, how EACs work, and how companies can use them.

Full transparency on the origin, no double counting and credible consumption of 100% electricity from renewable energies

Credible claims of green electricity consumption are always based on the purchasing and cancellation of Energy Attribute Certificates regardless of the procurement option. By matching the volume of electricity consumption in a given year with the cancellation of corresponding Energy Attribute Certificates a company is able to credibly claim green electricity consumption. This way, companies close the gap towards their aim of 100% green energy consumption whilst also actively contributing to shifting demand to zero-emissions energy.

The use of Energy Attribute Certificates is recognised by international standards such as RE100, CDP and Science Based Targets. It enables companies to improve their sustainability rating and is an effective measure to achieve Net Zero targets.

Credible consumption of green gas with biomethane certificates

ClimatePartner can support you in lowering your direct or Scope 1 emissions associated with fuel combustion at your facilities. To replace your existing fossil fuel supply, you can prove the use of low-emission green gas, also called biomethane, with biomethane certificates.

What are biomethane certificates?

Biomethane originates from biogas which in turn is produced by the biological degradation of biomass, primarily organic residues such as manure, agricultural by-products, energy crops and organic waste. These materials are fermented by bacteria in air-tight tanks in a multi-stage process.

After biogas is being upgraded to natural gas quality (98% methane) it is called biomethane and is injected into the gas grid to be distributed to businesses and households across Europe and North America.

Each unit of biomethane injected into the grid can be tracked by certificates to ensure ownership and no double counting from production to end use.

To meet sustainability criteria, the mass balance method is used to document the physical movement of biomethane through the natural gas network between the injection and withdrawal points.

While burning biomethane still emits CO2, the amount produced is of biogenic origin, so the total carbon footprint is very low compared to fossil fuels.

To meet increasingly ambitious energy targets and climate goals, it is expected that renewable gases will play a key role. Especially the injection of renewable gases into natural gas grids is predicted to be an important driver to decarbonise the transport and heating sectors in Europe and North America in the energy transition towards a net-zero economy.
