Award-winning carbon accounting for logistics emissions

December 9, 2025

When Austrian Post set out to strengthen the accuracy of its transport emissions data, the requirement was ambitious: an ISO 14083-compliant calculation for every parcel throughout Austria, delivered with full transparency across the entire logistics chain.

Transforming this requirement into a system that works in daily operations meant bringing together methodology, data, and real logistics processes. The result is a calculation approach that translates a complex standard into clear, repeatable steps and one that now supports both reporting and emissions management.

In October, this work was recognised twice: with Amazon’s Excellence in Emissions Reporting Award and the HERMES Wirtschaftspreis in the Innovation category. The awards recognise a calculation approach built to align with standards and work reliably in daily operations.

What the calculation solution delivers

The carbon accounting model that ClimatePartner developed together with Austrian Post enables precise and consistent emissions calculations across Austrian Post’s transport chain. Key elements of the solution include:

Operationalisation of ISO 14083:2023

A practical translation of the standard into a calculation logic covering all relevant transport and handling activities.

End-to-end focus on Austrian Post’s network

Regular ISO-aligned emissions calculations for every parcel throughout Austria.

A clear definition of all transport chain elements

Identification of each transport and hub operation category, with an emissions logic tailored to its role in the chain.

Complete data mapping

A structured view of all required data points and data-carrying systems, ensuring completeness and traceability.

A calculation concept tailored to Austrian Post

A model aligned with Austrian Post’s logistics activity, shipment characteristics, and data availability.

Integrated calculation support

Use of EcoTransit to calculate several transport chain elements for Austrian Post’s reporting to their customers.

Validation for external partners

A detailed methodology and process documentation provided to customers for transparency and quality assurance.

More than reporting: A tool for carbon data management

Their approach does more than deliver compliant reporting. It enables Austrian Post to:

  • monitor emissions continuously
  • understand reduction levers across the transport chain
  • meet customer and regulatory requirements
  • provide the calculation to their networks and clients

This system of transparency and reduction earned recognition by grounding carbon accounting in real operations.
