European Championships Munich 2022: carbon-neutral with ClimatePartner
September 24, 2021From beach volleyball and BMX to table tennis and triathlon, the European Championships Munich 2022 will be the biggest sporting event in Munich since the 1972 Olympics. Nine European Championships, around 4,700 athletes from around 50 nations will compete in a total of 176 medal events. To ensure that this can take place in a sustainable and carbon-neutral manner, the organizers are relying on the support of ClimatePartner.
From the beginning – the organization phase – they took care to keep carbon emissions as low as possible. For example, by using existing sports facilities in the city of Munich, or the planning of short distances between the venues and good public transport. The organizers worked with ClimatePartner to calculate the event's CO2 emissions, which range from accredited travel and accommodation to event technology, energy, food and beverages.
We offset the emissions that cannot be further avoided so far with three certified carbon offset projects from the ClimatePartner portfolio. Since these are preliminary calculations and are based on average and empirical values, the actual emissions incurred will be recalculated after the event.
Visitors are excluded from the calculation. However, they are given the opportunity to make a climate action contribution when purchasing their tickets.
Count & Last: a comprehensive sustainability concept
The carbon neutrality of the sporting event is part of the comprehensive sustainability concept of Munich 2022 under the claim "Count & Last". One focus is on the sustainable organization and staging of the event. Twelve interactive projects on the environmental, social and economic sustainability of the event complement the concept.
