Solar energy in Namibia

Energy from the sun

Solar energy in Outapi, Namibia

With an average of ten hours of sunshine per day, Namibia is one of the world's sunniest countries. It has enormous potential for solar energy yet, 60% of the country's energy is imported from neighbouring countries and 40% of its population is disconnected from the grid.

Nonetheless, Namibia has ambitious goals. By 2030, it wants to produce 70% of its energy from renewable energy sources, with independent energy producers feeding renewable energy into its national grid.

In northern Namibia, a ten-hectare solar energy farm produces 9,000 MWh of energy per year. Producing power since July 2018, it was developed with the support of ClimatePartner. The project is helping increase the proportion of renewable energy sources in Namibia's energy mix and improve regional and national supply.

Certificate type
Estimated Annual Emission Reductions (tons CO2)

Contribution to the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs)

No Poverty
10 percent of the shares are donated to Outapi Community Trust - an organization that helps provide better medication and expansion of schools.

Quality Education
Renovation of local schools. Among other things new sanitary facilities were installed

Affordable and Clean Energy
Every year, it feeds 9,425 MWh of energy into Namibia's grid, helping to make the country independent of energy imports and improve electricity supply

Decent Work and Economic Growth
The power plant has created new jobs. Local companies benefit from improved energy supply

Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
Modernization and support of local infrastructure, transfer of modern technology and knowledge related to solar energy generation.

Reduced Inequalities
The project promotes improved energy supply and economic development in a remote region

Responsible Consumption and Production
Solar energy does not cause pollutant emissions such as sulfur dioxide or nitrogen dioxide. The project helps to improve air quality

Climate Action
Reducing carbon emissions of approx. 9,300 tonnes per year by displacing fossil fuel-based energy generation

Life on Land
Solar energy does not cause pollutant emissions such as sulfur dioxide or nitrogen dioxide and thus protects the environment

Partnerships for the Goals
Our climate projects are building bridges from companies from industrialized countries to people in the world's poorest countries

How does solar energy help fight global warming?

Since energy from solar panels is created without burning fossil fuels, it is considered emission-free. The growth of renewable energy production is essential to prevent global warming and secure energy supplies for the future.
The amount of emissions saved by a solar energy project is calculated using the baseline method: how much CO2 would be released by generating the same amount of energy using standard energy production methods for the region?
