Debugging carbon emissions
January 29, 2026IT service provider for business-critical infrastructures
The BUCS IT Group is a company based in Wuppertal. As a managed service provider for small and medium-sized businesses and an expert in IT carve-outs, BUCS IT is responsible for business-critical IT infrastructures for its customers.
At BUCS IT, climate action isn't just some random sustainability project, but part of everyday business decisions. They look at emissions where they come from, aiming to take responsibility while basing their actions on solid data.
Rule 1: Climate action cannot be managed without data
BUCS IT didn't want to leave its climate action commitment at mere declarations of intent, but instead wanted to track emissions transparently, reduce them in a way that made sense, and invest in climate projects.
This requires a carbon footprint calculation. Without reliable data, it's not possible to set priorities, measure progress, or make informed decisions.
Rule 2: Aspirations need reliable foundations for calculating emissions
In order to systematically address climate action, BUCS IT required a foundation for calculating emissions and making informed decisions. It wasn't looking for a one-time fix, but rather a solution that would allow them to continuously track, compare, and manage emissions over time.
In ClimatePartner, BUCS IT chose a partner that combines digital efficiency with climate expertise to calculate its corporate carbon footprint (CCF) on an ongoing basis.
Rule 3: Reducing emissions is only possible with trackable emissions
Based on its CCF, BUCS IT defines the levers for reducing its emissions by focusing on where it makes sense: for example, by using electric vehicles and expanding renewable energy.
Not all emissions can be avoided in the short term though, so BUCH IT invests in climate projects that create added social value, which includes clean drinking water and improved cookstoves, certified under the Gold Standard.
The result
Manageable climate action as a ClimatePartner-certified company
BUCS IT has been calculating its CCF since 2021. Continuous accounting creates comparability over several years and makes it possible to evaluate developments and the impact of individual measures in a comprehensible manner.
BUCS IT is now a ClimatePartner-certified company. This certification makes the company's own standards transparent and verifiable; internally as a basis for further decisions, externally as reliable proof for stakeholders.
On this basis, BUCS IT is pursuing clearly defined goals: emissions per employee will be further reduced, as well as its purchased electricity consumption. From 2026 onwards, there will be zero scope 1 and scope 2 emissions, while investments will continue to be made in climate projects to take responsibility for any remaining emissions.
Rule 4: Climate action is an ongoing process
BUCS IT's focus is on further developing existing measures, tapping into additional reduction potential, and reviewing progress.
ClimatePartner remains an integral part of the ongoing collaboration. The calculation of the CCF continues to serve as the basis for decisions, monitoring, and communication with customers, partners, and other stakeholders.
