Raising the bar: WAGO’s reduction targets

WAGO’s climate journey began with a clear challenge: setting targets that not only matched the company’s ambition but also went beyond international requirements. As a global technology leader, WAGO committed to reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 70% by 2030 – significantly more than the minimum reduction rate set by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). For customers, employees, and partners this represents a clear and verifiable commitment to climate action.

About WAGO

The WAGO Group is one of the world’s leading suppliers of connection and automation technology as well as interface electronics. Family-owned since 1951 and the global market leader in spring clamp technology, WAGO employs around 9,000 people worldwide, including 4,400 in Germany. In 2024, the company generated revenues of €1.24 billion.

From safe and durable electrical connections to automation systems that improve energy efficiency and interface electronics that support renewable integration, WAGO technology helps customers optimise resource use, and build resilient energy and infrastructure systems.

Corporate carbon footprint for science-based targets

To set science-based climate targets, WAGO first needed a Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF) that met the requirements of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This meant gathering primary data across all emissions categories and defining targets that matched both the company’s ambition and strict international standards.

A structured path to validation

Before starting the project, WAGO had already taken part in several ClimatePartner deep-dive sessions. These provided valuable insights into climate action strategies, highlighting a solution-oriented approach. Based on this experience, WAGO decided to collaborate with ClimatePartner for the development and validation of its science-based targets.

During the project, ClimatePartner supported WAGO in

  • calculating a Corporate Carbon Footprint which fully meets all SBTi requirements
  • developing a suitable set of near-term targets targets tailored to their situation
  • preparing for the SBTi validation and helping them in every step throughout the process

Structured guidance and close coordination ensured that the process ran smoothly and in July 2025 WAGO’s targets were officially validated by the SBTi.

Results with business impact

WAGO’s climate targets for the SBTi includes:

  • 70% reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 (base year 2023), which is well below the 42% requirement by the SBTi
  • 25% reduction in scope 3 emissions by 2030

Implementation is already underway to create both short-term and long-term business value in WAGO’s operations:

  • Renewable electricity at major production sites
  • Heat transformation
  • Energy efficiency programs
  • Low carbon emission procurement strategies

These measures not only reduce emissions but also lower energy costs, stabilise supply chains, and meet growing customer demand for low-carbon solutions.
