Developing your own climate project

From the first idea to verified impact: companies looking to develop their own climate project will find the right starting point with ClimatePartner.

Let's talk

Why develop your own climate project?

Certified climate projects reduce, avoid or remove greenhouse gas emissions while creating measurable social and environmental impact. Companies that develop their own project go beyond financing existing projects. They take an active role, embed climate action into their core business and create lasting impact for the climate, local communities, and their own sustainability strategy.

Typical project types in climate project development

Nature-based solutions

These include technologies such as afforestation and restoration.

Carbon removal

Renewable energy

These involve technologies such as wind and solar power, as well as hydropower.

Carbon reduction

Social impact projects

These comprise technologies such as improved cookstoves or water filters.

Carbon reduction

Innovative approaches

These include, for example, technologies to avoid methane emissions.

Carbon reduction

All climate projects are certified under recognised international standards, such as the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) or the Gold Standard, and contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Afforestation, Rwanda

In Rwanda, deforestation leads to soil erosion, soil degradation and water pollution. As part of this project, bamboo is being planted along 1,000 km of riverbanks. The bamboo’s strong root system stabilises the soil, improves water quality and reduces erosion.

Afforestation, Ghana

As part of this project, non-invasive bamboo is being planted to restore 700 hectares of former primary forest. The bamboo connects patches of remaining native vegetation, sequesters CO₂ and promotes biodiversity. Local communities benefit from training and new infrastructure.

Afforestation, South Africa

Intensive farming and droughts are threatening one of the world’s most species-rich ecosystems in South Africa’s Eastern Cape. This project is planting 2,625,000 spekboom trees across 1,050 hectares of degraded land. This succulent tree permanently sequesters carbon, regenerates soils, and promotes biodiversity.
